This resource is intended to be an aid for Inspection Authorities (IA) and any aircraft owner who requires specialised information. Microlights are exempt from requiring a "type certificate" and are not subject to the same maintenance programmes as General Aviation (GA) aircraft, they are still subject to an annual condition inspection and the IA needs to be satisfied the aircraft is fit to fly. The regulatory compliance section lists all the CAA exemptions.
This resource is based heavily on FAA AC43.13-1b ACCEPTABLE METHODS, TECHNIQUES, AND PRACTICES? AIRCRAFT INSPECTION AND REPAIR. This should be seen as best practice in most cases and at times will describe the only acceptable process of repair. Most of the topics will have a link to the relevant AC chapter but may also have a microlight specific preamble.

Most of the information is contained within this resource but there are a few external links to specific manufacturers or suppliers. For those IA's or pilots requiring specific information on design requirements and testing we have included a copy of BCAR Section S Small Light Aeroplanes and BCAR Section T Light Gyroplanes also AC90-89A AMATEUR-BUILT AIRCRAFT AND ULTRALIGHT FLIGHT TESTING HANDBOOK

The Human Factors section is included to remind pilots and IAs of the importance of performing repairs and inspections properly and with correct process.
It is also hoped that on reading this resource a pilot, constructor or IA will gain a larger overview of the topics covered and broaden their awareness; that is to make them aware of issues without necessarily being an expert on any one subject. To put it another way we would like to make the afore mentioned aware of what they don’t know, you are at your most dangerous, when you don’t know what you don’t know! If you have a small knowledge of a topic you can research it deeper when required as opposed to completely overlooking it.

Also included are all the currently available milspecs referred to in AC43.131b, some will be of no use while others may be quite useful indeed.

And for those who have problems with metric to imperial conversions (i.e. most of us) this tool Convert  "convert" should be most useful, in fact it will convert almost any unit to any other unit. If your software gives a warning when starting this software click on run it is quite safe. Click here to install it on your system.

Please send any suggestions and corrections etc to tech@raanz.org.nz This is intended to be a live and growing document so don't be bashful. I hope you find this resource useful, Anton Lawrence RAANZ Tech Officer July 2006.
