The Jabiru engine is becoming a popular choice of powerplant for microlights. Although less expensive than a Rotax equivalent they do require more maintenance. The Jabiru manual is included here to help with any maintenance issues which may arise. Jabiru engines have also had a problem with flywheel retaining bolts breaking, this has been put down to incorrect propeller bolt torque and flywheel bolt torquing. Latter models now have dowels fitted to the flywheel. If the engine in question has not had dowels fitted it would be a good idea to check or replace the flywheel bolts every 100hrs. The rear timing gear will need to be checked as these have had their holes flogged. The prop bolts should be re-torqued every season change as timber is prone to expanding and contracting as temperature and humidity changes. Also if a prop extension is fitted then it should be checked for tightness and trueness. Please refer to the section on hardware/bolts for a greater understanding of the issues at play.
